Twenty year prison sentence in child sex abuse case

Today, September 28, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court:

KEITH LANGFITT, DOB: 4/2/1959, formerly of 405 E. 5th Street, Muscatine, was sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of Lascivious Acts with a Child. The Court imposed consecutive prison sentences for a total term of not to exceed 20 years. In addition the Court placed the defendant on supervised release for the remainder of his life after he completes the term of incarceration.

The case against LANGFITT was investigated by the Muscatine Police Department. The investigation showed he had sexual contact with a child under the age of 12 on multiple occasions. LANGFITT was ordered to be transported to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center to commence his prison sentence.

Muscatine Man Pleads Guilty to Arson, Criminal Mischief

Today, September 28, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court:

MICHAEL HEATH, DOB: 9/12/1989, a resident of Muscatine, pled guilty to Arson in the Second Degree and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.

Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department and Muscatine Fire Department showed that HEATH had set fire to a garage located behind a residence in the 2200 block of Schley Ave. on April 2, 2012. The garage, along with a motor vehicle and items of personal property inside the garage, were destroyed in the fire.

HEATH will be sentenced November 9, 2012, at 9:15 a.m.

Muscatine County District Court 9/21/12

Friday, September 21, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court:

DAKOTA ADAMS, DOB: 4/11/1994, of 813 Park Ave., Muscatine, pled guilty to Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed that ADAMS had damaged a motor vehicle parked in the Muscatine Wal-Mart parking lot and caused in excess of $1,000 in damage. ADAMS will be sentenced November 2, 2012.
PATRICIA FOOR, DOB: 6/12/1948, of 1616 Logan St., Muscatine, pled guilty to two counts of Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury. Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed that she had used excessive force against two of her children and that each child suffered an injury as a result. Sentencing will be November 2, 2012.
BRIAN MONROE, DOB: 5/15/1968, of 6616 41st Street South, Muscatine, pled guilty to Fraudulent Practices in the First Degree. Investigation by the Iowa Work Force Development Department and the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department showed that MONROE had collected $16,299 in unemployment benefits he was not eligible to receive because he was employed and failed to report that employment during the verification process for receipt of unemployment benefits. Sentencing will be November 2, 2012.

AARON SINDT, DOB: 11/17/1992, of Montpelier, Iowa, was sentenced after a guilty plea to Theft in the Second Degree. Investigation by the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department showed that SINDT had participated in the theft of property from a broken-down motor vehicle. The Court granted a deferred judgment, placed SINDT on supervised probation for 24 months and ordered him to pay victim restitution.

Muscatine man convicted of sexual abuse after jury trial

Today, September 18, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court, a jury found MATTHEW ELI VILLALPANDO (DOB: 11/14/1986, of 416 W. 3rd Street, Muscatine) guilty of the offense of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree following a two day trial. In addition, the jury found that VILLALPONDO had been adjudicated delinquent in 2003 for Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree. The Hon. Mark Cleve presided.

Evidence presented to the jury showed that the defendant performed a sex act against a person who was fourteen years of age while the defendant was 23 years of age. The case was investigated by the Muscatine Police Department. The incident occurred October 30, 2010, in a residence in Muscatine.

"I would like to thank the jury for their consideration of this case," said Muscatine County Attorney Alan Ostergren. "I would also like to thank Muscatine Police Department detectives Mark Lawrence and Joe Roseman who did an excellent job on the investigation. Most importantly, I want to thank the victim who had the strength to go to court to tell what happened. The jury believed the victim and held the defendant accountable" he added.

As a result of VILLALPONDO's prior adjudication of delinquency he faces a mandatory prison sentence of incarceration for a term not to exceed 25 years and must serve 85 percent (21 years, four months) before being eligible for parole. "The defendant is a repeat sex offender and was a real danger to the community. I am grateful that he will be facing a mandatory prison sentence," Ostergren said.

The Court revoked the defendant's bond and ordered him held in the Muscatine County Jail to await a sentencing hearing on November 9, 2012, at 9:00 a.m.

Muscatine County District Court 9/14/2012

Today, September 14, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court:

BRANDON ANDERSON, DOB: 1/13/1986, of 165 North Street, Fruitland, pled guilty to Theft in the Second Degree, Tampering with Records, and, in a separate case, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree. Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed that ANDERSON had misappropriated approximately $5,392.29 from his employer. In a separate case, investigation by the MPD showed that ANDERSON had broken a cash register at a Muscatine business while having an argument with a store employee. ANDERSON will be sentenced in each case on October 26, 2012, at 9:00 a.m.

KENNETH MICKEL BARNES, DOB: 11/7/1957, of Iowa City, was sentenced after pleading guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance, Third Offense. Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed that BARNES was in possession of crack cocaine during a traffic stop of a vehicle in which he was a passenger. BARNES had previously been convicted on two separate occasion of the offense of Possession of a Controlled Substance. The Court imposed a suspended sentence of incarceration for a term not to exceed five years. The Court also fined the defendant $750 and ordered the revocation of his driver's license. The defendant will be on supervised probation for two years.

Burlington woman sentenced for theft and forgery

LARRY'SHA LAWRENCE, DOB: 11/1/1991, of Burlington, was sentenced for Theft in the First Degree and three counts of Forgery. The Court imposed a total term of incarceration of not to exceed fifteen years and ordered the sentence to be served consecutively to pending probation violation sentences in Henry and Des Moines counties. Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed the defendant had been involved in a scheme to pass fictitious payroll checks at Muscatine area businesses. The scam netted approximately $40,000 in proceeds.

Guilty plea in sexual abuse case

Today, September 6, 2012, Shane Mathias, DOB 1/5/1976, of Muscatine pled guilty to two counts of sexual abuse in the third degree. The investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed he had sexually abused a 14 year old child in June of 2011. The defendant will be sentenced October 19, 2012, at 9:00 a.m.
