Muscatine County Attorney announces results of multi-agency human trafficking and prostitution investigation

Muscatine County Attorney Alan R. Ostergren announced today that a multi-agency investigation into human trafficking and prostitution was conducted in Muscatine, Iowa on October 24 and 25, 2012. The agencies participating in this investigation were:

U.S. Marshal Service
Federal Bureau of Investigation
U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement

This investigation resulted in the arrest of the following individuals. The filing of a criminal charge is merely an accusation and all arrested subjects are presumed to be innocent.

The following individuals have been charged with Prostitution, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment in the county jail for up to one year or an indeterminate prison sentence of two years plus a fine of $625 to $6,250.

Former Muscatine Man Sentenced to Prison for Sexual Abuse

Today, October 19, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court:

SHANE ORA MATHIAS, DOB: 1/5/1976, of New Boston, IL, formerly of Muscatine, was sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree. The Court imposed concurrent sentences of incarceration for a total term of not to exceed ten years. In addition, the Court placed the defendant on supervised release as if on parole for the remainder of his life following the completion of his prison sentence.

The case had been investigated by the Muscatine Police Deparment. Investigation showed that the defendant had performed a sex act against a person under the age of 16.

The defendant was immediately taken into custody and held in the Muscatine County Jail pending transport to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale to commence serving his sentence.

Muscatine County District Court 10/12/2012

Friday, October 12, 2012, in Muscatine County District Court:

CHRISTOPHER GESUALDO, DOB: 2/18/1989, of 2016 Breese Avenue, Muscatine, was sentenced following his guilty plea to Lottery Ticket Theft. GESUALDO was also sentenced for a probation violation for the offense of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree. The Court imposed concurrent sentences of incarceration of five years for the theft charge and ten years for the sexual abuse charge.

The lottery ticket theft case was investigated by the Muscatine Police Department. GESUALDO had been a clerk at a Muscatine gas station and used his position to steal an Iowa lottery ticket. GESUALDO was on probation for sexual abuse at the time.


JEREMY BARNEY, DOB 1/11/1977, of Wilton, pled guilty to Conspiracy. Investigation by the Muscatine County Drug Task Force showed that BARNEY had entered into an agreement with other individuals to manufacture methamphetamine.
