Muscatine man pleads guilty to sexual offenses against child, agrees to 60 year prison sentence

Today (May 17, 2012) in Muscatine County District Court:

NICHOLAS PALMAREZ, DOB: 6/9/1980, formerly of 1211 Wisconsin Street, Muscatine pleaded guilty to six counts of Lascivious Acts with a Child, each a class "C" felony.

PALMAREZ pleaded guilty under a plea agreement which calls for consecutive terms of incarceration for a total term not to exceed 60 years imprisonment. In addition he will be subject to supervised release as if on parole for the remainder of his life. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Investigation by the Muscatine Police Department showed that PALMAREZ sexually abused a child over a two year period ending at his arrest on December 31, 2011. The child was between the ages of eight and ten years of age during the offense conduct.

"This is an excellent result," said Muscatine County Attorney Alan Ostergren. "The Muscatine Police Department responded immediately to the allegation and conducted a thorough investigation. It was also very important to the case that the victim was forensically interviewed at the Mississppi Valley Child Protection Center in Muscatine. That gave me the evidence I needed to prosecute the case," Ostergren continued.

The defendant will be sentenced July 2, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. He remains in custody in the Muscatine County Jail. The Court revoked the defendant's bond after his guilty plea.
